SurReality by Matt Doyle

Thanks to the disastrous experience of reading a book last week, I was a bit wary when I started to read this short horror story. Fortunately, this was a great experience.

Told completely through newspaper articles and blog posts, this story unfolds methodically but still reels us in. You don’t get to empathize with the MCs as you do in most stories. This story has a detached tone but that is what makes this one unique. I received an ARC of this book and I am so glad that I decided to read this short story.

SurReality is a paranormal investigation show hosted by beloved co-hosts Tony Cork and Benny Marks. The finale of the season goes catastrophically wrong for the hosts while the TV show gains views as never seen before.

While investigating the case of the ‘slit mouthed woman’ the co-hosts are kidnapped and tortured. As a result they retire from the show but is everything alright now? Benny starts acting strangely and goes missing. He is suspected of several murders. Is this the work of a delusional man or is Benny possessed by the slit-mouthed woman?

Read the book when it comes out and tell me what you think. I think the author did a good job writing this one.

Warning: Depiction of violence, murder, kidnap/abduction.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

The story may seem simple but I loved the author’s style.

As always let me know what you think in the comments. Also, like and share if you enjoyed reading this review.
