I never thought that I would say this but I regret reading this book. The story itself is not a problem but the way it was written is infuriating. It lacks the ability to suck the reader into its world as the description of the scene is never satisfying. Rather it leaves us mystified. I am still reeling from some of the scenes depicted in the book. I can’t comprehend what the author was thinking.
The concept was promising. Book Genres sort of come alive and start telling stories, they would like the world to know, by sucking in innocents and victims. How cool is that? But of course, the genres are hell bent on harming everyone and as a result an agency was formed to combat them. So far so good. Then comes the confusing descriptions of battling the genres and the killing of the ‘Hearts’ of the genres. A genre can be defeated only by killing its heart. I must say I was completely lost when I read about the ‘unraveling of the threads if the heart’. Later on, I surmised these ‘threads’ to be the manifestation of the heart and the story it is trying to tell.
That is not to say that the story lacks any good points in its favor. There were moments in which the reader could sympathize with the MC but those moments are fleeting. I just don’t feel any sort of connection with the main characters. By far, the most interesting character was Agent Pearce who met an early demise.
The final case was meant to be phenomenal. In a way, it was but its grandeur was completely ruined by the lack of good editing. In my opinion, the author is a great story-teller but an average writer. Usually, I am not this scathing but I couldn’t control my sorrow over a good story laid to waste by lack of consideration for the readers. I hope that the author does better next time.
Rating: I would have given this one star but out of respect for the phenomenal concept and the story that was meant to be told, I am rating this a 2 out of 5.
