A Shopgirl’s Tale follows the life of a retail shop worker, Erika, whose life can’t be more mundane. Everything changes when she meets an actor, Xavier, that treats her the way she deserves to be treated. Can she overcome her past trauma and embrace the good things happening in her life? This is the main aspect of the story. The story conveys a message that ‘Good things do happen’ to people. A person suffering from trauma isn’t broken, crazy or useless. In fact, it is those who move on from the bad things that occur in their lives who are stronger.
The author does a great job in portraying the support system the MC has. Erika’s best friend, Rachel, is someone everyone needs in their lives. Even though Rachel can be insensitive at times, she remains a true friend to Erika throughout the story. Having a true friend through the thick and thin is not something everyone can boast about. Erika also has a great family who will do everything in their power to be there for her. I especially loved the ‘Papa Erik’ character. But all these characters were thrust to the back of my mind when I read about the friendship Xavier and his best friend, Felipe, have. What would I not give to have a friend like Felipe. Their friendship is termed as creepy by some but it is refreshing to see such great friendship once in a while. The story also mentions fans who speculate if they are together which is merely wishful thinking.
Erika changes a lot after Xavier enters her life. She begins to stand up for herself and makes decisions she normally wouldn’t have. Her story shows that all it takes for a person to succeed in life is a little push. A line in the story, ‘leap and the net shall appear’ explains the story much better than any review will. If you can overlook some rare grammatical errors in the book, you will enjoy the story. I simply wish that a few filler scenes weren’t in the story but that’s just my opinion. Others may like it. This is not a book that keeps you on the edge of your seat but it isn’t meant to. This isn’t a mystery or a thriller. So, if you want to read something inspiring, motivating, and entertaining, take a chance with this book.
